Overlord, 2018 – ★★★

Decently compelling, and the lead up to the monsters gives us a cliche but engaging World War II film. Once the monsters arrive, a little more oomph comes to the proceedings, with some good scares, but the film too often leans back on the “person talking suddenly gets interrupted by something horrific” trope. At times it feels like the closest we'll ever get to a Wolfenstein adaptation. It's let down by a well trodden idea (hint, just make the maroon liquid in the syringes neon green) and effects that swing from makeup to cgi and back frequently. Especially during the battle with the big bad who's supposed to have a gaping hole in his face, but sometimes just looks like someone strapped some prosciutto to his cheek.
