A bang up episode that finds Chilton running his Avengers Initiative, Dead Abigail, and post Red Dinner origins for all of our characters. We meet Joe Anderson's version of Mason Verger and are quite pleased, as well as find out what happened (in brutally graphic fashion) to Frederick Chilton post Miriam Lass intervention last season. The only thing keeping this from being in the top five episodes of Hannibal is the sheer lack of the man himself, seen in flashbacks, fantasies, and epistolary cutaways.

This thought just came to me. Now that Jack is not with the FBI anymore, how does that change the Red Dragon story? Now that Jack is not with the FBI and now that his wife is no longer with us 🙁 could Jack die in this first half of the season and have someone else take over and recruit Will?
Speaking of Red Dragon, i finally got around to reading the book for the first time. It was pretty good. It was a frightening book. But i found the Thomas Harris’s writing style to be very emotionless and kind of detached. The writing seemed very matter-of-fact. To be fair, that is a big reason why the book was very frightening. Did you have those feelings when reading the book?
Harris’ writing is very matter-of-fact but he still did a good job painting the picture, especially in Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs. There was some great tension in those books.
I can’t even begin to speculate how they’re going to play Jack in the Red Dragon portion of this season. The first couple of episodes this season have taken big chunks straight from the novel, rather than picking from here and there. Going to be interesting to see how that plays out once we’re in Red Dragon. I’d hate to see Jack go. They may just find someone else to re-recruit Will. How will he be lured back now that he’s been acting alone and outside the law?
I think that Jack’s “alibi” of going to Europe to retrieve Will will be enough, once the Red Dragon murders begin, the FBI NEEDS their best profilers.
I really dig minimalist white rooms like Alana’s hospital, Mann’s depiction of Lecter’s cell, Beyond the Black Rainbow (and its obvious inspiration in Kubrick’s 2001), Vincenzo Natali’s Cube and Nothing.
Jack ignoring Hannibal to retrieve Will is the opposite of “cutting Will out”.
Count me among the Reddit crowd because it struck me as completely inconsistent for Will to go from repeatedly trying to kill Hannibal (first saying it would feel good depending on whether Hannibal is a murderer) and considering them light years from friendship, to claiming they’re friends and he wanted to run away with him (and even imagines killing Jack!). Will couldn’t even sit to let Hannibal kill Freddie Lounds, and Will hates her. Abetting Hannibal’s additional murders makes no sense (it’s strange enough from mysterious Bedelia), when Will just keeps getting more and more reasons to hate Hannibal. The reason he was at such a low point in season 1 is that Hannibal put him there!
Price & Zeller were appropriately solemn after Katz died.
I don’t think Mason has rejected Alana’s assistance for Cordell. He can have both.
Chilton is a monster!? What? He’s a jerk and unpleasant but hasn’t done anything monstrous at all. I don’t even think he’s as sociopathic as Freddie Lounds (who is gleeful about her inability to feel shame and ability to ruin’s people’s lives), who also isn’t a monster.
Another great podcast! I’m loving this pretentious in the outside but profound in the inside season.
