I've never been a big fan of Shyamalan, and have disliked many of his most beloved films. Perhaps this is why I'm seeing Old with very fresh eyes. From beginning to end, it unfolds in a unique way that, while I've never seen it before, tugs at the emotional memory of old Twilight Zone episodes. The evolution of the characters, especially the kids, moves in some shocking, funny, and occasionally grotesque directions. “Is there a twist?” would be what my concern would be with any Shyamalan work. While some may disagree, I would argue that it isn't actually a twist, it's just a solution to the puzzle. The solution even feels reasonable, if incredibly ethically dubious. Thoroughly enjoyed.
