Hannibal S03E05 – Contorno – Eat The Rudecast

The tragic hubris of Inspector Pazzi comes to a head in an episode that gave us severe déjà vu from the film version of Hannibal. We lament that his story was rather brief, and a single line change from the text leads Cooper down a complaint path to Watchmen. In the mean time Will and Chiyoh take the dream train through Narnia, and Jack says goodbye to Bella in Italy. This all leads to another fantastic fight scene, the ultimate throwdown between Hannibal and Jack, who no longer has any fucks to give.

All on this episode of Eat The Rudecast, a podcast about NBC's Hannibal, and the works of Thomas Harris.

  • In Fuller’s version of the Hannibal story, does Hannibal even know that Pazzi has a wife? I really have no problem with this season so far the way some other people do – the slowness, the visuals, ect. – but i wish the show had focused on Pazzi with a little more detail.

Also, the trailer you talked about. I saw that. Some stuff that is coming up is… ah… is crazy the right word?

True, Hannibal may not even know that Pazzi has a wife since their interaction was so brief. The hanging scene would have had more weight to it if Hannibal had learned about Pazzi wife and was negotiating to keep her safe. There could have been a way to show that Hannibal knew Pazzi had a wife, or meeting her would be even better, and knows that he will do anything to give her what she wants. But alas, we get a far too brief visit to the Pazzi storyline.

Glad you’re on board with the visuals this season!

  • I think what happened with those rushed scenes with Pazzi is that they had problems with production, it was so difficult that Fuller asked NBC to move the premiere date like 2 months later if I remember that right.

That’s a possibility. Bryan Fuller did say changing from an 8 day shooting schedule to a 7 day schedule was a challenge. Would be interesting to find out whether that meant they cut planned scenes from Florence thus shortening the Pazzi storyline. 8 day shooting schedule is challenging enough, even thought it’s the typical shooting schedule in the US. Cutting a day makes a HUGE difference.

  • re: the slowmo phone business, another Hannibal podcast I listen to (amatteroftaste) had a guest who suggested it was reminiscent of a pokie (or… slot-machine? in USAian) to underline that at that moment Pazzi was gambling with his life and future–hoping for a big pay-off at a huge risk.
