So very near the precipice that divides how good it is from how good it wants to be. Flashes are visible here and there, especially in the backstory of Vlad and the 70s, feeling like this movie could’ve been a Scott Pilgrim-esque media feast, but instead it’s let down by its VERY DEFINITELY cis-dude written script and direction. The trans angle is unique but perhaps underexplored, and, better explored by a trans woman writer likely. In all, its ambition far exceeded its grasp, but the jawline on Vlad made me yearn for Vampire Frasier.
