Hosts, 2020 – ★★★★

Hosts seems to jump off from the Bodysnatchers subgenre, and takes it to places that genre rarely goes. Not about paranoia at all, or who is really a host, but instead about the horrid difference between host and parasite. Where the pod people subjectively promised a better world, the entities in Hosts are brutal, cunning, and ruthless. The performances are uniformly good, especially once they’ve been taken over, but it’s the patient filmmaking that really brings this home. The hulking presence in the doorway, silent, with only glints in his eyes, is an image that will surely haunt me. The film is unafraid to linger and wait, and before we even know what’s really happening we grow uncomfortable at the long patient stretches of normalcy, waiting for it to be torn asunder by chaos.
