Darkman, 1990 – ★★★½

A dark superhero flick from the era of Burton’s Batman that brings Danny Elfman along. Exciting, fun, occasionally silly, Darkman could’ve been a true franchise had Raimi (and Neeson) not moved onto other things and left the sequels as direct to video. Raimi’s signature flourishes are all here, for good or ill. (He just can’t resist some Stooges gag) What really impressed me was how hammy Neeson allowed himself to go. Granted, he was still three years out from Oskar Schindler, but his growly rasp and Phantom of the Opera movement are just delightful. Another film that i should not have slept on for 30 years.
