The Night Sitter, 2018 – ★★½

The style here, very Argento in colors and synth and witches, is almost enough to make up for a weak script, perplexing plotlines, and mediocre to bad acting from almost all included. There’s no reason that this should be a Christmas movie, but it is. There’s no reason the sitter should be a criminal, but she is. Moments of likability from the lead and child helps elevate the movie at times, as well as some decent gore, but all feels muddy, un-thought-through, as though the result of the very first brainstorming session for this plot. Such a shame, too, because it’s got style for days and the relationship between an abandoned boy and his babysitter is a solid throughline.
