The Empty Man, 2020 – ★★★½

In the end, I’m not sure how much sense it all makes, but it is quite a mood. Combining cults, Buddhism, superstition, urban legends, and procedural horror, The Empty Man manages to combine so many things we’ve seen before that it often feels new. Every instinct I had about where the film was going proved wrong as it progressed. Having written about tulpas myself, I had an indication of where it might be going, but the circuitous path we took to get there was consistently engaging. Unfortunately in the end we’re left reflecting on whether any of what we just saw made sense when you examine the plot and story logistics, or was it all mood. And if it was, so what…was still worth the watch. Though, a 22 minute opening short film was completely unnecessary.
