The Deep House, 2021 – ★★½

Ever since Hellraiser have films tried to carry the fear of being tugged toward the horrors of the unknown, and most turned into pale imitations of haunted house and demon stories. The rote can still occasionally transcend, like Event Horizon, or, as in The Deep House, feel like something we’ve seen so many times before, only barely unique by setting it underwater, similarly to As Above, So Below telling a very routine story, but elevating it with the catacombs. Both transcend only barely, and ultimately both fall backward into the mire of their lack of originality to go along with exciting and unique settings.
