La Llorona, 2019 – ★★★★

Beautiful and patient, telling a story that feels timeless and timely at once, showing the power innate to women that they’re so often denied by men. No traditional horror tropes are used here, not even explaining the mythology implied by its title. This may be because La Llorna is so well known culturally, or because extensive explanation is unnecessary to tell a story about the rippling effects of the evils that men do. Truly haunting, and something I’ll be thinking about for a while.
