I have to hand it to Excision, it’s the first time in a long time that I haven’t immediately known how to rate a movie. Annalynne McCord is really great as very awkward (and likely quite mentally ill) high school girl. The interstitial gory/psychosexual dream sequences are beautiful, even if one never really gets to the heart of WHY. Add to this a great supporting cast that includes John Waters as a priest, Traci Lords as a religious mother, and Ray Wise…this feels like the kind of film Waters himself would make if his gory fantasies were unleashed (since Mondo Trasho.) Unfortunately, the narrative sort of just builds without ever giving us a denouement. Perhaps that’s part of the point the film is making, life doesn’t have a denouement after all, but as a narrative it feels abbreviated. Worth a watch, likely not a rewatch.
