There was no “pilot”, per se. It was a direct-to-series order, so right after they finished filming the first episode they started on the second.

Fuller has stated that the inspiration for the antlers was the scene in “Salem’s Lot”.

  • Hey guys. I’m coming to your podcast very late. I’ve just finished season 2, and I’ve only listened to your first episode. I LOVED your theory about Will’s pendulum, by the way.

I just had to comment, because I was just thinking about the change in Will’s comfort level between the pilot and later episodes, YESTERDAY.
I think you could argue that this is a conscious acting choice on Hugh Dancy’s part, because in the pilot, we have a cold open to Will working the tooth fairy case. He is surrounded by FBI officials, and casually interrupts his own “this is my design” moment to ask for records from the security company’s records. In this moment he is surrounded by people.

On the other hand, the depiction of his first time profiling, shows Jack telling him that he can have the room to himself; that he doesn’t have to talk until he’s ready. And, as you noted in your podcast, Beverly Katz’s interruption almost sends him into a meltdown.
Because this happens all in the first episode, I have to think the show is depicting how Will has gotten comfortable over time with profiling with other people in the room.

Again, love the show. I am looking forward to catching up with your more recent shows!
