Anything For Jackson, 2020 – ★★★★½

Blew me away. First of all, any film that can make a child in a sheet ghost costume terrifying deserves some praise. Anything for Jackson takes a simple premise (the loss of a child) and goes in a balls out original direction with it. The performances are uniformly terrific, and the pathos and pain and desperation on the part of the Walshes make you, well, maybe not approve, but certainly understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. The gore and ghost effects are kept mostly in shadows, but that makes them all the more effective. One of the ghosts’ body is broken and his movement alone made me recognize performer Troy James who played the horrifying creation in the final season of Channel Zero. From one moment to the next I had no idea the direction it was going, and it substitutes jump horrors for jump scares in the vein of Stir of Echoes’ “Talk to me” and “Want to see something really scary?” Well worth a watch, and Shudder continues to deliver originals of stunning quality.
